End-of-Life Education

Dressie MaeIn living up to Covenant’s Mission, education is a priority for our center. Covenant Hospice provides professional in-services for our paid and volunteer staff. We also provide workshops for the private caregiver, the family and the community at large. Since comfort and hospice care is provided in many settings, so are our educational programs.

Educational programs cover such topics as pain and symptom control, comfort or palliative care, documentation, communication and grief. Covenant has received national recognition by the Hospice and Palliative Nursing Association for its continued support and training of staff for Certified Hospice and Palliative Nursing and Certified Hospice and Palliative Nursing Assistant training programs. These training programs involve hourly "lunch and learn" sessions as well as an 8-hour study retreat taught by Covenant’s own staff of Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurses. Covenant staff obtained a 100% pass rate on the exam in the first quarter 2003.

Covenant maintains a staff of 20 nurses, social workers and counselors who provide in-service training in the community. These in-services are provided under Covenant’s Partners In Care (PIC) Program in Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilities, Hospitals, Home Health Agencies, Community Support Centers and Civic Organizations. A list of topics that are available for Contact Hour credit is located on the PIC Page of our website, and a list of topics for your social, civic or religious group can be found on the Speakers Bureau Page. Requests for a speaker can be made by calling the local Covenant office and speaking to the Community Educator.

Often our communities are facing tragic happenings. In the wake of September 11, 2001, the need for support and understanding has been in the consciousness of all Americans. Covenant has developed a program for the community, Grief in the Workplace, that can be presented to your staff either before you face an event or during a time of crisis for your company or organization. Other programs for the community include Advance Directives, Team Building, Stress Management and Leadership Programs. All of these programs can be arranged for you by calling the Covenant End-of-Life Education Center at 850-202-0914.
