Volunteer Training

Hospice volunteers receive free training at various locations according to their areas of interest.

  • Hospice Volunteer Orientation – two hours (required for all volunteers)
This training provides an overview of hospice care and explains the role of volunteers at Covenant Hospice. Orientation is required for all volunteers interested in administrative support and outreach. This is a pre-requisite for Patient and Family Support Volunteer Training.

  • Patient and Family Support Volunteer Training– six additional hours (required for all volunteers who will have contact with patients and families).
This training provides information about clinical care and comfort, social and emotional support, spiritual support, grief and bereavement, communications skills and volunteer documentation. Training topics are presented by Covenant Hospice nurses, social workers, bereavement specialists, chaplains, volunteer managers and volunteers.

  • Teen Volunteer Training – (for high school students)
This training focuses on preparing teens to volunteer with Covenant Hospice, visiting patients in facilities, providing administrative support in branch offices and assisting with fundraising events. Teen training covers the same topics as patient and family support training and is presented in an interactive, teen-friendly format. Teens may choose to attend the traditional orientation and patient/family support volunteer training along with adult volunteers.
  • On-line Volunteer Training -
Individuals may choose to complete volunteer orientation and training on-line.  At this time training is not yet available through the internet but is available in the Covenant branch office.  Training must be scheduled through the branch volunteer manager.

In addition to the initial volunteer orientation and training, Covenant Hospice volunteers are invited to participate in ongoing educational offerings. Additional two-hour training classes are available for volunteers interested in the 11th Hour, Ambassador/Military Ambassador, and Reflections volunteer programs. Volunteers in Covenant's Inpatient Units in Pensacola may choose to complete Patient Care volunteer training in order to assist clinical staff in providing hands-on care.  Covenant offers social activities throughout the year including an annual Volunteer Appreciation Event. Volunteers receive a monthly Covenant Volunteer Newsletter and an annual Volunteer Satisfaction Survey.
