Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “It is one of the beautiful compensations of life, that no man can sincerely help another without helping himself.” Jodie Williams, volunteer Manager with Covenant Hospice can’t agree more. Over the past three years, Williams has been building up a team of volunteers to assist the not-for-profit organization care for patients and families who are facing end-of-life issues.
“The best part about our team of volunteers at Covenant is that when you need help, somebody will step up to the plate and be there to help,” said Williams. Covenant Hospice offers many volunteer opportunities, for all ages, that fit into any schedule. Volunteers receive specialized training to provide companionship and support to patients and their families, or to assist with fundraising, administrative support and community outreach.
Williams enjoys working with her team of volunteers and finding solution for patients and families. “Sometimes you have to think outside the box to accomplish what you are trying to do for them, but I just try to help them the way that I would want someone to help me if I were in their situation,” said Williams.
She is responsible for the recruitment and retention of volunteers in the Brewton and Andalusia, Alabama areas and recently expanded her work with the Covenant Hospice branch in Crestview, Florida. For that reason, chances are you will find Williams on the road. “I think I drive as much as the case managers,” jokes Williams.
Covenant Hospice volunteers receive free training from Williams that prepares them to volunteer in many different ways. She offers trainings throughout the year at times that meet volunteer’s schedules. “We have volunteer opportunities for everyone here at Covenant Hospice from patient and family support to administrative support. I will find the best fit for you,” said Williams. In addition to specialized training, Covenant Hospice volunteers are invited to participate in educational in-services, socials, receive the volunteer newsletter and attend the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet.
