House Calls; Not a Thing of the Past

A common response that Dr. Peter Sylvester, Medical Director for Covenant Hospice, receives from his patients is one of amazement when he shows up at the door step of their homes. Dr. Sylvester is just one of the physicians Covenant Hospice employs who have advanced training in pain management. 

Making house calls is one of Dr. Sylvester’s favorite parts of the job. “It is a most rewarding sense of usefulness, and the patients and caregivers really appreciate the visits,” said Sylvester. He and the other Covenant Hospice physicians can make house calls to patients wherever they live, making it more convenient for the patient and helping to avoid emergency room visits.

The Covenant Hospice physician serves as an extension to the patient’s own physician, but never a substitute. They are also available to consult with the patient’s physician and other Covenant Hospice staff to coordinate the palliative aspects of patient care. “We actively involve the patient and the caregivers in all choices,” said Sylvester. 

Dr. Sylvester enjoys making house calls, because he gets inspired. “I am inspired everyday by the bravery and loving commitment that is shown by Covenant Hospice patients and their families,” said Sylvester. For as long as patients are in need, he will be in the car traveling to visit patients in their homes, and when he is not making house calls, chances are that you can find Dr. Sylvester enjoying sailing, which is one of his passions.
