A Joy and Calling

Many consider their job “work,” but for Covenant Hospice Medical Director, Dr. Herbert Gannon, that can’t be further from the truth. “Patient care has always been, and will remain, my joy and calling,” said Gannon. As a Covenant Hospice physician, Gannon is one of the staff physicians who have advanced training in pain management and who make house calls to patients wherever they live, making it more convenient for the patient and helping to avoid emergency room visits.

It’s the staff at Covenant Hospice in Dothan, Alabama that gets Dr. Gannon motivated. “Working with, and just being around, the true ‘hospice hearts’ of Covenant makes it a pleasure to get out of bed every morning. It is a wonderful daily challenge to make sure my heart is on the same plane as the hearts of my co-workers,” said Gannon. 

Dr. Gannon actually serves as an extension to the patient’s own physician, but not a substitute. He is available to consult with the patient’s physician and other Covenant Hospice staff to coordinate the palliative (or pain management) aspect of patient care. In addition to being inspired by his co-workers, Gannon is also inspired by his patients. “My inspiration comes from the numerous people I see on a daily basis who seem not to have had the opportunities in life that many of us have had,” said Gannon.
