Sharing Your Talents with Others

Kelly PopeAuthor and humorist, Erma Bombeck once said, “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, “I used everything you gave me.” Kelly Pope, Hospital Liaison for Covenant Hospice, can’t agree more, and feels that she is able to utilize her talents everyday to help others. “I feel that my job allows me to use my gifts and talents to help other during one of the most difficult times anyone could face,” said Pope.

As a Hospital Liaison, Pope is responsible for educating hospital case managers, social workers, doctors, nurses and other staff about quality end-of-life care. “I make sure that they understand that if a patient needs us, that we will be there for them regardless of the patient’s ability to pay for services,” said Pope. Covenant Hospice, a not-for-profit organization, provides care to patients facing end-of-life issues without regard to illness, age, race or religion and care is always based on need and not the ability to pay.

Pope considers it a privilege that families allow her to help them through a very hard and emotional situation. “Being able to help patients and their families understand hospice care, and providing emotional support to them as they decide about hospice is what I enjoy most. I like being a support to families as they face the crisis of the declining health of their loved one,” said Pope.

Pope learned about the importance of sharing her talents from an early age. “In my family, both of my grandmothers and my mother taught me to develop my talents and to share them with others,” said Pope. On a daily basis, as she is explaining the concept of comfort care and symptom control with patients and families, Pope uses her talents to dispel fears and reverse myths about hospice care, which is truly giving every bit of talent that she was given.
